The United States will mediate the delivery of Soviet-made tanks to Ukraine to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in the Donbass.
In this context, Washington is negotiating with NATO member states.
According to the New York Times, the United States will act as a mediator in the delivery of Soviet tanks to Ukraine for the first time since the conflict.
It is also unknown which countries may be involved in the delivery of the tanks to Kiev.
The decision to deliver Soviet-style tanks to Kiev was taken after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky appealed to NATO countries.
Recall that on March 24, Zelensky addressed NATO member states: “Share only 1% of your tanks with Ukraine. Ukraine wants 1%. Only 1% of all your tanks! Give it to us or buy it. But the answer is still clear. We. I could not get.”
The process of tank delivery to Ukraine via the USA may begin in the coming days.
It was not immediately clear which Soviet member or country would supply Soviet-made tanks.
However, according to experts, this country may be Poland.
Last year, it announced that it would replace obsolete T-72 tanks in the Polish army with SEPv3 version 250 M1A2 Abrams from the USA.
The US State Department allowed Poland to sell tanks in February this year.
In addition, the Polish Armed Forces is actively equipped with German-made Leopard tanks.
The tanks that Ukraine will buy will increase the resistance of the military units in the Donbas. This will be a new phase in the war in Ukraine. Russia’s Defense Ministry said this week it will focus on military operations in eastern Ukraine.
According to the Oryx analytical group, since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24, the Ukrainian army has captured about 161 Russian tanks. Russia said the Ukrainians captured 43 tanks.
